 Peg Newton Smith

At the 2003 annual meeting in Little Rock , the Arkansas Museums Association presented a special award to Mrs. George Rose (Peg) Smith in recognition of her lifetime contributions to the museum community in Arkansas and to preserving our state’s heritage. It was a fitting award, particularly since she was involved in the early organization of the AMA.

In 1966, Arkansans involved with museums and other historical organizations realized the need for a statewide association. Smith, who was then serving as chair of Little Rock ’s Quapaw Quarter Association, helped to organize a workshop at the old Arsenal Building in MacArthur Park at which representatives from various museums met. The Arkansas Museums Association originated from those early meetings.

Throughout her life, Peg Smith remained steadfast in promoting Arkansas ’ past and was known statewide for that commitment. Her name appeared on the membership lists of such organizations as the Old State House Museum , the Arkansas Historical Association, the Pulaski County Historical Society, the Mt. Holly Cemetery Association, the Butler Center for Arkansas Studies, and Historic Arkansas Museum .

Peg Smith died on July 20, 2003.  In recognition of her lifetime commitment to preserving Arkansas ’ heritage, the Arkansas Museums Association Board created the Peg Newton Smith Award to honor other worthy recipients.
